Planning and Facilitating Program Administration

3.3 Evaluate and select resources that build a collection addressing curricular needs and learning goals in collaboration with teachers, technology staff, and students

1. Selection Policy Of Carteret County Schools

Selection is an ongoing process. In selecting materials for purchase, school media personnel should:
Evaluate available resources
Assess curricular needs
consider requests from faculty, students and curriculum committees
consider networking arrangements
consult professional prepared aids for selection, such as Booklist, Bulletin of the Center for Children's books, etc.

2. I gave Julie Perry and one of the teachers a link to my Pathfinder on Holocaust Literature. It is directly from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

3. I compiled a list of educational websites for the math teachers.
Attn Math Teachers:

Below are websites/(description of the site) you can access for additional Math activities:

www.ilovethatteachingidea.com/ideas/subj_math.htm

Students who are behind and need basic math skills would benefit from this site. Activities teach angles, place value, graphing, prime factors, etc.

www.321know.com/div.htm

This site offers interactive practice with division, dividing fractions and decimals, and division problems. Good tutoring site.

www.primarygames.com/puzzles/strategy/battleship/start.htm

Battleship game as well as math strategy/puzzle solvers games. Flashplayer and Shockwave plugins required.

www.mathsisfun.com

This site was started by a British school teacher to encourage an interest in math. Many different puzzles and practices found on this site.

4. I read Technology and learning which is a back to school selection aid. This is the aid I found the math sites in. I looked up most of the sites, and then selected my choices to make a list for the teachers.

2.Collection analysis by Amy Irving

The state IMPACT Model suggests that libraries that promote successful learning are ones that:
Respond to changes in the school’s program
are integral to curricular and instructional needs
Ones that meet the users’ needs
Provide access to materials from outside the school
Include formats that users prefer
Facilitate the media and technology program

The oldest part of the collection is the nonfiction section. The average age of the nonfiction books is 1998. The Impact model suggests that the books should be copyrighted within five to ten years. This is the part of the collection that should be weeded first to meet IMPACT standards.

The average age of fiction books is 2002. This part of the collection is more up to date. This is probably because nonfiction does not change, and therefore does not need to be weeded as regularly.

The library does provide access to materials outside of the school in that it has 2 online databases (NC LIVE AND NC WISE OWL) and there are numerous links on the media website.
